Voting for our Frame an Iconic American contest opened May 11, 2012 and will run through May 26, 2012. Voting extended through May 28! Here's where the votes currently stand:
If you haven't yet voted, you can still help choose a historical figure whose biographical portrait will be composed by Robert Weingarten, a noted photographic artist. Read about Audie Murphy, Alice Paul, Celia Cruz, Samuel Morse, and Frederick Douglass and then vote for the figure you would like to see portrayed.
The finished portrait will be unveiled this fall and displayed at the Smithsonian.

This comment is in direct responce to Alan Lewis, CELIA CRUZ IS THE PERSONIFICATION OF AN AMERICAN, AND "WHOEVER SHE HAPPENS TO BE" IS THE MOST ICONIC CUBAN AMERICAN IN HISTORY, HAVE SOME MORE RESPECT FOR A LEGEND AND A QUEEN WHO CONTRIBUTED SO MUCH TO NOT ONLY OUR COUNTRY BUT THE WORLD. Audie Murphy is one of the most iconic legends in American military history and much deserving of the position.

If there is an iconic AMERICAN in this mix it is Audie Murphy and NOT whoever Celia Cruz happens to be. He is far more representative of an American Icon.
