Well to be innovative costs a lot of money.
I guess one of the first things those heroical managers did (when revenues started to decline) was to cut money in R&D.
Maybe they thought: hey, we already know what people want (big trucks with a lot of hps), so why being innovative.
Unfortunately this "pays off" now...

The US never did well against germany and japan when it comes to the automotive industry. Some even outsource their performance car parts manufacturing from outside countries. this only shows that, to be a leader of a certain industry, you should have all the resources and the manpower, US just dont have it yet. time will come

Ford has the new Fiesta.
It's only one car, but it's a visible sign of change happening now.

I think the main reason why Detroit is outbeat by Japanese and even Korean auto brands because of the high cost.

Look at GM in China, it is still one of the most profitable company in the world (or call it sub-company) because of its lower cost in China vs here in US.

When it comes to futuristic concept, japan's design looks more amazing than those made from Western Countries. Have you seen the new Mazda "Kiyora"? Its totally unique and awesome!
