Wonderful article. I just came from seeing the collection at the Smithsonian and, too, was awestruck by this photograph. Mrs. Ricks does appear slightly pregnant, something, no doubt, George intended to be reflected in this simple but beautiful photograph; part of that amazing Scurlock eye. Thank you, Michelle, for keeping this fascinating and important history of African American photography alive.
